Absinthe

One really yummy aphrodisiac spirit with an aniseed or licorice-like flavor has been outlawed in the United States since around 1912, but has just recently again become vogue in some European countries. Special establishments are serving it almost in a fraternal or ‘secret member’ type of atmosphere. The mystery and magical aura surrounding the knowledge of the drink seem to have survived the ages and Absinthe is as coveted today as in older societies. Although we can not make Absinthe, we can make…

Imitation Absinthe

2 tsp of crushed Angelica root
3 tsp of crushed Aniseed
3 crushed Cardamom seeds or ground cardamom
½ tsp of ground Coriander
½ tsp of Marjoram
½ tsp of crushed Fennel seeds
2 ½ tsp of dried or ground Wormwood
1 pint of Vodka

Place the wormwood and vodka in a pint jar with tight-fitting lid. (Remember, make sure the jar is sterile to prevent contamination. This can be accomplished by boiling the jars in water, or microwaving the jar filled with water until it boils. In either case, keep it boiling for about 3 minutes. Or use new jars cleaned by dipping them in boiling water or pouring the water on them) Keep the vodka/wormwood mixture in a dark place for 2 days. After a full 48 hours, filter the mixture using fine cheesecloth or coffee filters and add the rest of the ingredients. Let this concoction sit in a dark place for two to three weeks. When you are ready to serve your homemade Imitation Absinthe, you will need a slotted spoon, sugar cubes and ice water. Pour a small amount of the spirit into a glass. Then, put a sugar cube on the slotted spoon laid across the top of the glass. Then, pour ice water over the sugar until the ratio of ice water to spirit is approximately four or five to one, experimenting until you get the desired taste. Just remember not to use this aphrodisiac in excess. (Note: some suggest the use of distilled water in processing to cut bitterness. This is a matter of brewer’s choice)

The ritual of preparing the spirit, the set up of the slotted spoon, special glass with a bowl bottom shape, if using, and the sugar cube and pouring of ice water is all erotic in nature. The large amount of aphrodisiacs used in making the spirit and consuming it together with your lover are all sure to make the night magical.

Mexican Turnera Liquor

Another aphrodisiac liquor has been made in Mexico for thousands of years. The ancient Mayans revered this drink. It was used as ritual medicine and during festivals drank with delight. The main ingredient is damiana leaves, a very potent aphrodisiac. The spirit is known by many names. The following recipe is very tasty:

Mexican Turnera Liquor

1 oz damiana leaves
2 tbs saw palmetto berries
2 tbs angelica root
1 tbs vanilla
1 cup honey
750 ml whiskey

Combine all ingredients together in an airtight sterile jar with a tight fitting lid for one week. Then, strain the concoction, saving the liquid in the jar. Heat the herbs and add honey and stir well. Cool and add whiskey to mixture in the jar. Put the jar with the lid tightly closed in a dark place for three to four weeks before consuming. This has no special recommendations for serving. Just enjoy!
