Digene HPV Test
It’s a known fact that Human Papillomavirus (HPV) can cause cervical cancer for women and that, more often than not, it can be transmitted through sex. One alarming fact about HPV is that it can also be transmitted through your finger tips. HPV can infect not only the sexually active types but also those who barely have sex. That’s the reason why women should have their regular pap tests. But what if pap tests fail to spot the cancerous type of HPV?
Although pap tests have been used in detecting early signs of cervical diseases which could lead to cervical cancer, it is not entirely foolproof simply because either the sample being examined does not contain enough cervical cells to represent the entire cervix or signs of abnormal cells may simply be missed by the laboratory technologist when looking through the microscope. As a result, "false negative" results are possible from a Pap test. This means you are told your Pap is normal, when abnormal cells that could cause problems actually exist.
To ensure that women get 95-100 percent identification of high-risk types of HPV (cancerous types) the Digene HPV Test was invented. The Digene HPV Test is based on proprietary Hybrid Capture® technology, which combines two innovations from the rapidly evolving field of life sciences – DNA/RNA probes and monoclonal antibodies – to allow rapid, standardized gene testing in virtually any lab setting. In 2003, the Digene HPV Test was approved for routine use along with a Pap for all women 30 years of age and older, the group considered most at risk of cervical cancer, because getting both tests provides the best assurance of finding cervical disease before it becomes cancer.
It has been emphasized so many times that screening and early detection of any cancer is critical in treatment and survival. The earlier a cancer is detected, the higher the rate of successful treatment and patient survival. Cervical cancer is deadly, but it can be detected early if women will submit themselves to regular screening.
