Erectile Dysfunction

The color of impotence!!!
Erectile dysfunction (ED or (male) impotence) is a sexual dysfunction characterized by the inability to develop or maintain an erection of the penis. Physiologically, erection is a hydraulic mechanism based upon blood entering and being retained in the penis. In order to achieve an erection three conditions must occur: The nerves to the penis must be functioning properly; the blood circulation to the penis must be adequate; and there must be a stimulus from the brain. If there is something interfering with any or all of these conditions, a full erection will be prevented.

Common causes of ED include cardiovascular leakage; diseases that affect blood flow, such as diabetes, atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries); nerve diseases, psychological factors, such as stress, depression, and performance anxiety; and injury to the penis. Chronic illness, certain medications and a condition called Peyronie's disease (scar tissue in the penis) can also cause ED. Also, ED is usually associated with aging. Most men, between the age 40 and 70, experience the onset of erectile dysfunction. Bicycling can also cause ED as a study in 2002 found that the number of hours on a bike and/or the pressure on the penis from the saddle of an upright bicycle is directly related to erectile dysfunction.

Some ED Facts:

  • Overweight men are more likely to have ED
  • Common causes of ED include nerve diseases, psychological conditions and diseases that affect blood flow. A number of prescription drugs and over-the-counter drugs may also cause ED by affecting a man's hormones, nerves or blood circulation
  • Tobacco, alcohol and recreational drugs can all damage a man's blood vessels and/or restrict blood flow to the penis, causing ED
  • Regular exercise can reduce the risk of ED
  • Stress and anxiety are leading causes of temporary ED

How to Know If You Have an ED:

Every man should know when his penis is not functioning properly. When it doesn’t achieve erection when the occasion comes, or if ever it goes erect partially or in brief periods only, then without a question, you do have an ED. To better understand this, here are some guidelines.

Basically, erectile dysfunction is characterized by the regular or repeated inability to obtain or maintain an erection. There are several ways that erectile dysfunction is analyzed:
  • Obtaining full erections at some times, such as when asleep (when the mind and psychological issues if any are less present), tends to suggest the physical structures are functionally working. However the opposite case, a lack of nocturnal erections, does not imply the opposite, since a significant proportion of sexually functional men do not routinely get nocturnal erections or wet dreams.
  • Obtaining erections which are either not rigid or full (lazy erection), or are lost more rapidly than would be expected (often before or during penetration), can be a sign of a failure of the mechanism which keeps blood held in the penis, and may signify an underlying clinical condition, often cardiovascular in origin.
Of course there are also some clinical tests to effectively know the nature and the right medication, if there’s one, to your dying manhood; but you have to go to the right doctor for the right information on that matter, or you could try other sites for that information.

The Cure:

Treatment of ED depends to a great extent upon whether the underlying cause is primarily psychological or organic. Most treatments work on a temporary basis: they enable an erection to be attained and maintained long enough for intercourse, but do not permanently improve the underlying condition. There are different treatments available:

Education and Counseling – it is a consideration done if your ED is psychological in nature or, perhaps, a step you have to take prior to major treatment if you’re going “nuts” and “manic depressive” over your inability to get a hard-on.

Lifestyle Modification – Eat healthy, get a “radical sabbatical” away from a very stressful mode of laborious life, have a plenty of exercise, that’s what it means. If your job takes away a lot from your health and social life, quit it. An improved and quality filled life will give vitality to your withering “lump of flesh.”

Oral drug therapy – When counseling and lifestyle modification can’t help you, you should familiarize yourself with Viagra and other PDE-5 inhibitors such as Cialis and Levitra?

Alprostadil – This can be injected into the penis or inserted using a special applicator - usually just before sexual intercourse.

BEFAR – Currently, only commercially available in the Far East, Befar® has shown a clinical efficacy of up to 83% in patients with varying degrees of ED. The cream itself has an onset action of 10-15 minutes and can continue on past 4-hours, and is favorably comparable to the efficacy of the injectable alprostadil. Due to Befar’s direct application method, the side effects induced by the application have to date been limited to transient warm and burning sensations.
Penile Vacuum Pump – These work by drawing blood into the penis and are also used just before sexual intercourse.

Hormone Treatment – It is rare, but some men receive hormones such as testosterone for their erection problem that resulted due to hormonal deficiency.

Surgical implantation of penile implant prosthesis – Often, as a last resort if other treatments have failed, the most common procedure is a prosthetic implant which involves the insertion of an inflatable or rigid rod into the penis which will be fitted surgically. Implants are irreversible and costly. All these mechanical methods are based on simple principles of hydraulics and mechanics and are quite reliable, but have their disadvantages.

Revascularization of obstructed arteries – A treatment in cases where your blood vessels becomes cluttered and/or blocked due to arteriosclerosis (or the hardening and narrowing of the arteries causing a reduction in blood flow throughout the body), and/or diabetes mellitus (chronic high levels of blood often damage small blood vessels and nerves throughout the body, which can impair nerve impulses and blood flow necessary for erection). This is a procedure done whereby doctors get to operate on you or your penis to reconnect (or clean-up, if possible) your obstructed blood supply.

Alternative Treatment:

Besides getting medically approved remedies for ED, you can also dig into a bunch of supplements as part of a healthy lifestyle to finally end that lack of potency. Supplements are intended to provide nutritional support. Because a supplement or a recommended dose may not be appropriate for all persons, a physician be consulted before using any product.

Recommended food supplements:
  • Bioflavonoids
  • Flaxseed meal
  • Inositol hexaniacinate
  • Selenium
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Zinc

Herbal medicines / Aphrodisiacs:

Herbal medicines and aphrodisiacs can also help in the situation. They usually do not have significant side effects (and don’t have instant significant results as well) when used appropriately and at suggested doses. It takes a constant intake of appropriate dosage in daily or weekly intervals (depending on the prescription) before the effects can be totally felt.

These herbs may be used to treat erectile dysfunction:For other aphrodisiacs that might interest you also, please help yourself through the list provided on the sidebar of my blog, or you can click this >>>link.
